Master of Arts

 

INTRODUCTION

The Master of Arts is a two year course for graduates with a relevant Bachelor of Arts degree.  The first year consists of some coursework and a substantial component of research; the second year is entirely research and is devoted to the preparation of a thesis.

 

The School of International, Cultural and Community Studies offers the following fields of study in the Master of Arts degree:

      History

      Politics and Government

      Religious Studies

      Sociology/Anthropology

The Master of Arts (Religious Studies) course requires two years of full-time or equivalent part-time study.  In the first year students take six units of study which involve a range of graduate seminar programs on topics of current academic importance, together with research preparation work.  Second year students develop a research project and are examined by submission of a Master thesis.

 

COURSE LOCATION AND MODE OF STUDY

The course is available by full-time or part-time study on Mount Lawley campus.

 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

A three year degree in Religious Studies or a related discipline from a recognised tertiary institution.  Examples of relevant degrees include Biblical Studies, Theology or Islamic Studies.  Graduates of other humanities or social science disciplines may be permitted to enter the Master of Arts (Religious Studies) course with a combination of subjects deemed by the postgraduate course coordinator to be relevant to their proposed course of study.  Students without relevant background should enrol in the Graduate Diploma of Arts (Religious Studies) which can provide admission to the Master program.

 

COURSE STRUCTURE

Stage 1

Students enrolled in the Master of Arts (Religious Studies) on the basis of a relevant Bachelor degree or Graduate Diploma are required to complete the following six units:

RES5104 Research Preparation: Textual Research 20 
RES5105 Research Preparation:The Context of Research 20 
 
Plus two units selected from:
REL5108 Modern Religious Thinkers 20 
REL5117 Methods and Issues in Biblical Studies 20 
SSD5100 Directed Study in the Social Sciences 20 
 
Plus:
REL5100 Research Proposal 20 
REL5210 Research Project 20 
REL5211 Research Project 20 
 
Other graduate coursework units may be substituted for units in the research project, with the prior approval of the Postgraduate Coordinator.
 
Full-time students enrol in three units per semester. Part-time students may enrol in a maximum of two units in any semester.
 
Students may proceed to Stage 2 of the Master of Arts (Religious Studies) course provided that:
 
(a) the Head of School, in consultation with the postgraduate course coordinator, approves the transition;
 
(b) a minimum average of 65 per cent has been achieved by the student.
 
Students who pass Stage 1 but are unable to proceed to Stage 2 may be eligible to graduate with a Post Graduate Diploma of Arts (Religious Studies).
 
Stage 2
On successful completion of six units in Stage 1, students are required to enrol in thesis units as follows:
 
The thesis component of this course is entirely research based and equivalent to 1 year of full-time study. Each semester students nominate if they wish to enrol into research thesis unit: REL6200 at 25, 50, 75 or 100% of full-time enrolment.
 
Students are required to continue re-enrolling in the thesis component of their study until the thesis is submitted for examination.
