Various forms of social action have emerged when dealing with the prevention of drug-related problems. They include education, skills training, prevention campaigns, community development and lobbying for social policy changes. The focus of this unit is on the theoretical underpinning of prevention and harm minimisation. Special issues explored include: the influence of models of drug use/addiction on prevention; the impact of education; education/prevention dichotomies; the workplace as a site for prevention; the role of the mass media; levels of prevention; harm minimisation; and the importance of adoption of a systems approach to prevention. The unit will also provide an introduction to drug policy development in Australia. | |||
