This unit examines the nature of poetic discourse and poetic texts. While taking into account the characteristic conventions and concerns that distinguish the work of one age from another, the focus will be on the unique achievements of major poets. The unit aims to deepen literary appreciation by extending awareness of the importance of such formal aspects as metre, imagery and syntax, the inter-relation of form and content, the elements of innovation and tradition in a poet's work. | |||
