This unit examines the nature of illicit drug and alcohol use in Australia, the impact on policing services and the role of police in preventing and minimising the harms associated with illicit drug and alcohol use. Specific strategies are canvassed that police might engage in to facilitate prevention and harm minimisation. Factors within and external to the police sector that influence the nature and amount of police activity afforded to illicit drug and alcohol harm minimisation are also discussed.
