U76 Master of Social Science

The Master of Social Science by Coursework and Project(s) is offered by the School of International, Cultural and Community Studies. The course can be completed in one year full-time or part-time equivalent. The program is designed for professionals involved in the delivery of services to the community. The course is designed to enable professionals to develop their research in the diverse range of social sciences contexts.  Master of Social Science by Coursework and Project(s) candidates are accepted in the fields of Children and Family Studies, Community Studies, Counselling, Counselling and Psychotherapy, Development Studies, Disability Studies, Gerontology, Human Services, Women's Studies and Youth Work.

 

SPECIAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  1. A relevant Bachelor of Social Science degree with a course average of 65%.
  2. Students with a Bachelor degree in an area related to the social sciences with a course average of 65%. 
  3. Students who have a Graduate Certificate in Social Science with a course average of 65% may be given advanced standing of one semester in the Master of Social Science by Coursework and Project(s).  Recognition of prior learning may be given for certain units, on application to the Manager, Faculty Student Services and with the approval of the course coordinator.

YEAR ONE - SEMESTER 1
The Master of Social Science is a five-unit program (120 credit points) and can be completed through either of the following options:
 
CSV5103 Special Study 1 in Community Services 20 
CSV5104 Special Study 2 in Community Services 20 
CSV5105 Research in Community Services 20 
 
YEAR ONE - SEMESTER 2
CSV5106 Masters Project in Community Services 30 
CSV5107 Masters Project in Community Services 30 
OR
CSV5109 Masters Project in Community Services 60 
 
Once the first semester has been completed full-time students enrol in CSV5106 and CSV5107, while part-time students enrol in CSV5106 in their third semester and in CSV5107 in their fourth semester.
 
Note that students may complete two separate projects at 30 credit points each, or may instead, with permission of their supervisor, combine the two units and complete one project worth 60 credit points. Students must complete a minimum of 120 credit points to be awarded the degree.
