V75 Bachelor of Arts Honours

The Bachelor of Arts Honours is a one year course for students who have demonstrated strong academic ability in their Bachelor degrees, the final year of which involves research oriented study. It consists of coursework and the preparation of a thesis.

 

Honours candidates are accepted in the fields of:  English, Geography, History, Language Studies (French and Japanese), Politics and Government, Religious Studies, Social Sciences, Sociology and Anthropology, and Writing.

 

SPECIAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

A minimum course average of 70 per cent in a relevant bachelor degree.

 

All theses, except in Writing, follow the ECU Guidelines, that is 15,00-20,00 words.

The thesis for a Writing student comprises a creative project and a related theoretical/critical essay. The creative work (approximately 80% of marks) will take the form of either a collection of poems, a one-act play script, a novella (17,000 words maximum), or a collection of short fiction or non-fiction. In special circumstances, and with the approval of the postgraduate coordinator, students may be permitted to submit part of a longer work in any of the above genres, or part of a novel, biographical/historical work or other work of non-fiction.

The essay (approximately 20% of marks) takes the form of an essay (2,500-3000 words maximum), which may involve one or more of the following in relation to the writing project: relevant theoretical issues; its conceptual and/or cultural contexts; its aims and methods; its relation to other writers or writing within the genre; any other matter agreed upon with the Candidate's Supervisor and appropriately approved.

 

NOTE:

For Honours in French or Japanese the thesis should be writen in the appropriate language and should be 10,000-15,000 words in length.
