EARLY CHILDHOOD STUDIES

Course Code B50

 

The Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Studies) qualifies students to work with young children 0-8 years. The award provides an initial qualification for early childhood teachers in both:

 

a)   Child care settings which cater for young children 0-5 years, and

 

b)   Kindergarten, pre-primary, and junior primary settings which cater for children 4-8 years of age.

 

The award is granted after successful completion of four years full-time study.

 

The degree includes compulsory units studied by all students and elective units which are chosen by students to enable them to specialise in a particular area or combine a number of related areas of study.

 

COURSE LOCATION AND MODE OF STUDY

The Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Studies) is available by full-time study at Mount Lawley campus.

Internship Semester
Depending on availability of placements in schools/centres, high achieving students who have a maximum of four units left to complete their degrees may be offered the opportunity to undertake their final semester of study via an internship position teaching in a school/centre. Interested students will be expected to complete an expression of interest prior to commencing their ATP and to liaise with the early childhood studies internship coordinator.

Once the internship is confirmed, students should enrol in:

Three other units appropriate to the course structure.
 
NOTES:
1. *Signals this unit will be taught across ECS/ Primary.

2. Catholic Education Accreditation B requires two general studies units in Catholic Studies plus one Catholic Education Elective.

3. In each year of the program students undertake professional teaching practice.

4. In the fourth year, students undertake an Assistant Teacher Program (ATP) comprising one term of approximately ten weeks of continuous teaching practice in a child-care centre, or kindergarten or pre-primary centre or a junior primary class (Years 1-3). The Assistant Teacher Program is conducted during the seventh semester across the second term of the school year.

5. In fourth year students will complete two six hour units in the ATP semester.

6. For additional information on Teaching Practice refer to the “Professional Practice Information, Procedures and Rules” available from the School of Education or the University Handbook.

7. All students enrolled in the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Studies) are required to demonstrate competency in literacy and numeracy. Student assignments and examinations must be of an appropriate academic standard.

1. Students choose from units offered within the School of Education or from units offered in other Schools, to best support their career options.

2. Three units must be at Level 4 (unless the Electives are made up of units from another School or Faculty as part of a three-year program).
