Graduate Diploma of Arts

 

INTRODUCTION

The Graduate Diploma of Arts is a one year full-time, or equivalent part-time course designed to provide graduate students with the opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills relevant to specific occupational fields.

 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

An appropriate three year degree award from a recognised tertiary institution, or equivalent.

Some fields of study within the Graduate Diploma of Arts may have special admission requirements.  Students should refer to the relevant section on major fields of study for further information.

 

COURSE STRUCTURE

The course consists of eight units of study.

 

The following fields of study are available in the School of International, Cultural and Community Studies:

 

      Aboriginal and Intercultural Studies

      Consultancy in Human and Social Services

      Language Studies

      Professional Writing

      Public Policy and Analysis

      Religious Studies


Language Studies

 

The Graduate Diploma of Arts (Language Studies) does not, on its own, constitute a recognised teaching qualification but it is recognised for upgrading an existing teaching qualification.

 

COURSE LOCATION AND MODE OF STUDY

The course is available by full-time or part-time study on Mount Lawley campus.  It is also available by external study.

 

COURSE STRUCTURE

Students are required to complete the four core units, plus two or four units, as specified, from one specialist area, and two approved electives, where necessary, to make a total of eight units.

Elective Units
Elective units, as approved by the course coordinator, are required to make up the total number of units to eight. These are to be chosen from the options provided below. The course coordinator’s prior written approval is required for any proposed elective not already specifically listed within the course structure for the Graduate Diploma of Arts (Language Studies).

LAN4101 Language in Teaching and Learning Contexts 15
LAN4110 Teaching Reading and Writing to Adults 15
LAN4111 Planning for Adult Literacy Learning 15
or
One to two units drawn from another specialist area within the Graduate Diploma field of Language Studies (listed above therefore no specific approval required).
or
One approved unit from another field or another award, (for example, Graduate Diploma of Arts (Aboriginal and Intercultural Studies), Bachelor of Education fourth year, Graduate Certificate of Education in Adult Literacy and Numeracy, etc.). Course Coordinator’s prior written approval is required for any elective in this category.
