In this course, students will conduct independent research and prepare and write a research thesis, after completing some related coursework units having a focus on research preparation and methods. The research thesis will be either about planning or urban design. |

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Stage 1 (Preliminary)
Students require a Bachelor degree in a planning discipline for admission to stage 1.
Stage 2 (Thesis stage 2 only)
Students can be admitted directly into stage 2 with the following qualifications.
. A Bachelor degree with Honors: or
. An approved research-based Graduate Diploma; or
. An approved equivalent qualification; or
. Appropriate research preparation. |

COURSE STRUCTURE
This course comprises of two years of full time study or the part time equivalent. The program includes two stages. |

STAGE 1 |
Stage 1 requires the completion of 120 credit points (6 units), consisting of units in research methodologies as well as the state of knowledge and research activity in planning and urban design method and techniques

At the conclusion of Stage 1, students unable to proceed to Stage 2 may be eligible to graduate with a Post Graduate Certificate of Planning or a Post Graduate Diploma of Planning. |

STAGE 2 |
Students complete a thesis in an area which has been identified during the thesis preparation in discussion with the course coordinator and their supervisor. The thesis component of this course is entirely research based and is equivalent to one year of full time study. Each semester students enrol in the research based thesis unit at 50 or 100% of full time study enrolment. Students are required to continue re - enrolling in the thesis unit each semester until the thesis is submitted for examination.
