Y04 Bachelor of Laws Bachelor of Business

This double degree combination provides students with the theory, practical experience and transferable employability skills, including leadership, teamwork, critical thinking, communication and problem solving, needed for employment in a wide range of professions, and as a basis for further study in a variety of disciplines.
The Bachelor of Laws equips students with skills for the courtroom and beyond, providing greater scope and options for a rewarding career in the legal, corporate, commercial and social justice fields. Practical experience may be gained at the on-campus Joondalup Community Legal Centre and through the Criminal Justice Review Project (‘Innocence Project’).

Bachelor of Laws OR Bachelor of Business can be awarded if sufficient credit points in the relevant program are completed and subject to meeting the course structure of that award.

 

PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION

 

Bachelor of Laws

The ECU Bachelor of Laws degree satisfies the academic requirements for admission of law graduates as legal practitioners in Western Australia. Professional recognition extends to the online mode of delivery. As with other Bachelor of Laws degrees in Australia, before a law graduate may be admitted to the legal profession in that state or territory, certain additional requirements must be satisfied following completion of the Bachelor of Laws. Law graduates seeking admission in Western Australia should refer to the Legal Profession Act 2008 (WA).

 

Bachelor of Business

(Accounting) - CPA and ICAA accreditation

Students completing the major in Accounting and who are seeking CPA Australia (CPAA) nd other professional body accreditation must take LAW2410 Income Tax framework as a LAW elective in addition to LAW3102 Corporations Law (Core Law unit) instead of LAW2300 Company Law

Some units in the Bachelor of Business may be offered on the Mount Lawley campus.

Business Core units and Business Edge units are available off-campus (online). Note: Only the majors of Accounting, Finance, Human Resource Management, Management, Marketing, Planning and Tourism and Hospitality Management can be completed entirely off-campus (online).

Requirements:

  • Students should take care in ensuring that they satisfy the pre requisites for any unit.
  • Students should check with the School of Law and Justice to determine which elective units are offered by the University in any semester.
  • Unspecified Law electives, based on previous studies under a recognised LLB course, may be credited towards the above course by the Bachelor of Laws Course Coordinator and in accordance with the University's rules and policy on advanced standing.

Bachelor of Business

Requirements:

  • No more than 180 credit points (12 units) completed at level one.
  • A minimum of 60 credit points (4 units) completed at level three.
  • Students must complete the 3 Business Edge units and a minimum of 5 Business Core units.
  • Prerequisite units must be passed before enrolment in subsequent units.  In certain circumstances this requirement may be waived by the relevant Major Co-ordinator.
  • In general, all level one Business Core units must be completed before level two units are studied and level two units before level three units.
  • In general, the Business Edge units must be completed sequentially with BES3500 taken in the final semester or year of study.
  • Accounting Major

        CPAA, ICAA and IPA accreditation

        In the Accounting Major, students do not need to take LAW2300 Company Law II unit for accounting professional 

        body accreditation. Instead, LAW3102 Corporations Law (LLB core unit) will be used for accreditation.

  • Finance Major

         LAW2410 Income Tax Framework is unable to be taken as part of this major if LAW3109 Taxation Law is taken as an  

         LLB elective unit.

  • LAW1100 Legal Framework

        Students requiring LAW1100 as a pre-requisite unit for a Level 2 or Level 3 unit can use LAW1111 or LAW1117 as a   
        substitute for LAW1100 in this double degree only. Students are required to contact the Faculty Student Information 

        Office for assistance in enrolling into any units that require LAW1100 as a pre-requisite. Planning students will be

        required to take an additional Planning elective unit instead of LAW1100.

* A Business major program consists of 120 credit points (8 units) of study and includes one additional Business Core unit. Students must ensure their choice of Business core units includes the unit required by that major. All units listed in the major must be completed to satisfy the requirements of that major. Failure to do so may mean that students are required to take additional units to satisfy the requirements of the major.

Requirement for Accounting accreditation

 

Students completing the Accounting major and who are seeking CPA or other professional body accreditation must complete LAW2410 Income Tax Framework as a LAW elective. LAW3102 Corporation LAW (LAW core unit) will replace LAW2300 Company Law for accreditation.
