CPS3101 Extending Literacy: The Fluent Reader and Writer
SCHOOL OF EDUCATION
Credit Points: 12
Prerequisites:
CPC2103 Teaching Reading and Writing in the Early Years: The Emergent Learner

Description:

The third language and literacy unit consists of two modules of learning.  The first module extends pre-service teachers’ knowledge of the skills, concepts and understandings significant to the needs of fluent and advanced literacy learners. Theoretical knowledge and teaching and learning models that are relevant to developing the competencies of fluent literacy learners in the areas of reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing and critical literacy are presented.  Pre-service teachers will learn about and critically examine a variety of teaching practices and organisational approaches and explore methods for adapting these in order to cater for the specific needs of students with diverse language, social and cultural backgrounds.

The second module focuses on planning for literacy learning within a framework that considers the relationship between assessment, planning, teaching and evaluation. Pre-service teachers will investigate different approaches to the assessment of children’s literacy knowledge. They will learn to create forward plans for the teaching of literacy where consideration is given to relevant curriculum documents and policies, different literacy learning contexts and the individual needs within groups of children. They will develop an understanding of the relationship between a forward planning document and the day-to-day teaching and evaluation of literacy.
