SCHOOL OF EDUCATION | |||
Credit Points: 15 | |||
Description: | |||
This unit focuses on the determinants and consequences of youth alienation and disaffection. It examines educational and social programs that have proved successful in addressing these issues, and provides an opportunity for students to research community youth agencies and services that can support schools and teachers. It is particularly concerned with how 'at risk' adolescents can be identified, and how schools can be responsive to their needs. The notion of ‘Health Promoting Schools’ is introduced. This unit is also concerned with the power of the media in influencing and constructing youth, and how youth, especially Australian, constructs itself. Issues pertaining to society’s perceptions and expectations of youth, particularly in Australia, are investigated too. Full Unit Outline | |||
