DESCRIPTION

The unit will focus on the introduction and development of a variety of teaching-learning strategies suitable for teaching the knowledge, skills and values dimensions of the Society and Environment Learning Area. Inquiry based strategies will be emphasised to encourage teachers to act as facilitators of learning. A detailed examination of teacher planning processes will include the preparation of resources, excursions, use of textbooks, assessment and monitoring procedures.

 
LEARNING OUTCOMES

On completion of this unit students should be able to:


  1. plan and implement a range of approaches that will assist students to develop inquiry skills in Society and Environment;
  2. develop and use teaching strategies to facilitate the study of current events and controversial issues;
  3. use a range of teaching/learning strategies to implement the knowledge, skills and values components of the learning area;
  4. locate and utilise a range of local community resource centres for effective teaching and learning in the Society and Environment Learning Area; and
  5. identify and apply appropriate assessment and monitoring techniques to report on the level of achievement of Society and Environment outcomes.
 
UNIT CONTENT
  1. Using the inquiry process to develop student outcomes.
  2. Strategies for developing student interest in current events.
  3. Teaching and Learning strategies to promote conceptual understanding.
  4. Strategies to promote active citizenship, democratic processes, social justice and ecological sustainability.
  5. Resources for teaching Society and Environment: texts, audio-visual, computer software, the internet and community based.
  6. Planning and programming techniques for the learning area.
  7. Assessment, monitoring and reporting techniques.
 
TEACHING AND LEARNING PROCESSES
A combination of lectures, excursions, workshops and school experiences may be used in this unit.
