Description:

This unit explores European art music from 1600 to 1750. The unit will cover both sacred and secular music of the Western tradition and an attempt will be made to relate the music and composers to a general development of musical style as well as to the social, religious, and cultural aspects of the time. While focusing primarily on stylistic developments, the history of the performance of this music and the problems of performing this music today will also be discussed.
