017 Diploma in Language Studies

The Diploma in Language Studies is designed to develop students’ speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in French or Japanese, with particular emphasis on terminology, structures and registers for communicative use in contemporary society.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Standard admission requirements. Applicants for the advanced language majors will require WACE 3A/3B, or equivalent level language skills in the relevant language.

SPECIAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

There are special conditions for entry into the Japanese Majors.

Native speakers of Japanese who have completed their compulsory education in Japan and/or in a Japanese educational institution overseas (i.e., six years at primary and three years at junior high school) are not eligible to enrol in a Japanese Major. Other background speakers of Japanese may be requested to complete two Linguistics (LST) units instead of JLS1165 and JLS1275 as part of their Major or Minor.

COURSE LOCATION

MODE OF STUDY
This course is available by Part-time mode.

MODE OF DELIVERY
This course is available in the following mode of delivery - On-campus.

The Diploma can only be done part-time, and is often completed alongside studies in a degree, with the combined diploma/degree requiring the equivalent of one full-time year more than the degree on its own.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The course will comprise eight units drawn from the undergraduate major in the chosen language, commencing at the appropriate level (Introductory or Post-TEE), as set out in the corresponding BA major structure. The Diploma must include at least two third year coded units in the language of study.

The Diploma may be studied alone or concurrently with an undergraduate degree and in the latter case will normally add one year to the duration of the student’s course. When studied alongside a degree the sequence of units must be approved by the School of Communications and Arts and the student’s ‘home’ Faculty. For most effective language learning the sequence of language units will usually be one unit per semester throughout the four years of the combined diploma and degree program.

Unit enrolments each semester must be selected in consultation with the coordinator of the student’s undergraduate degree program in conjunction with the coordinator of the relevant language study program.
