Human Services Major
MABUSZ
C58 BACHELOR OF SOCIAL SCIENCE

The Major in Human Services is a specialised Major consisting of twenty units (330 Credit Points). There are two complimentary streams within the Major: social science and social work. These streams provide the student with knowledge and skills in working with people across the community services sector. The focus of the Major is on understanding the rights of people to have access to professionals and services that provide support to minimise harm in their everyday lives. The social science stream focuses on child development and youth issues; community work; helping and interpersonal skills; cultural and gender dimensions; social policy; social research; leadership; and management, and challenges the student to consider viewing and solving societal issues from a number of perspectives. The social work stream, undertaken in the third year of study, focuses on social work theory and practice and includes a 45 Credit Point Social Work Field Placement. This specialist Major prepares the student to work in a leadership position in all areas of the community services sector and ensures they are workplace ready. The Human Services Major adds another dimension for the student as it provides a smooth transition to the Bachelor of Social Work upon graduation from the Bachelor of Social Science. As this is a specialised Major it cannot be undertaken with any other Major or Minor program of study.
