C25 Associate Degree in Criminology and Justice

The Associate Degree in Criminology and Justice adopts a contemporary approach to the education of practitioners in the areas of police and corrections. Students will develop an understanding of the theory and research that informs policing practice and offender management. They will also acquire skills in the practical application of policing and offender management.

 

The course links closely with the WA Police Academy and the Corrective Services Training Academy, giving students the opportunity to participate in relevant practical training. The course is designed as an entry pathway to policing or corrections.

 

The Associate Degree in Criminology and Justice is designed as a career development opportunity for those working in the area of policing, security, public safety, custodial corrections or community corrections. This course offers police and corrective services personnel a unique platform into tertiary education. Through this course students can apply their existing knowledge of policing or offender management to develop university level skills such as researching, academic writing and critical thinking.

 
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Normal ECU entry requirements apply. In addition, students will need to meet the admission requirements of the Western Australian Police Academy or the Corrective Services Training Academy

 
SPECIAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

In addition, students will need to meet the admission requirements of the Western Australian Police Academy or the Corrective Services Training Academy. With the approval of the course coordinator, applicants who have previously completed equivalent police training in another jurisdiction will be considered for entrance.

This course is available on Joondalup Campus.

This course is available by Full-time, or Part-time mode.
 
MODE OF DELIVERY
This course is available in the following modes of delivery - On-campus, and Online.

All ECU units are available both in the on-campus and on-line mode of delivery. WA Police and Corrective Services training is only available full-time and delivered on campus at the relevant training academy.
 
COURSE STRUCTURE

The Associate Degree in Crimonology and Justice requires a minimum of 240 credit points (13 units) and normally requires two years full time study or the part time equivalent.

 

The degree has the following components:

  • Core program of 195 credit points (10 units) which includes a practicum unit of 60 credit points; and
  • 45 credit points (3 units) of elective units.

The unit JUS2100 Police Academy Practium and the Corrective Services Academy Practicum are taught solely at the relevant Academy. Students will not enrol in these units but upon successful completion of recruit training at the Academy, will be given advanced standing for the unit.
 
Students who are unable to complete the Associate Degree and have completed 180 credit points may be eligible to exit with an Advanced Diploma in Criminology and Justice with Course Coordinator approval.

Students who are unable to complete the Associate Degree and have completed 60 credit points may be eligible to exit with a University Certificate in Criminology and Justice with Course Coordinator approval.
