HIS3143 Slavery and Liberty in the Atlantic World
SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATIONS AND ARTS
Credit Points: 15

Description:

By the seventeenth century there was regular contact between Europe, the Americas and Africa as slaves, gold, raw products and goods were traded across the Atlantic. This unit focuses on one of the most intriguing and paradoxical processes in history, the parallel rise of both slavery and modern ideas of liberty and democracy in the Atlantic world. These processes arose in an era of expansionist European empires and were linked to imperial warfare, a modern capitalist financial system, growing commercialisation and even the first signs of economic globalisation. This unit will, among other issues, examine the transatlantic slave trade, piracy and democracy, imperial rivalries in the Atlantic Ocean and the causes and meaning of the American War of Independence.
