K93 Bachelor of Hospitality and Tourism Management

The Bachelor of Hospitality and Tourism Management is designed to provide the theoretical knowledge and practical skills for a career in the hospitality and tourism industries. This strong, industry-based course is designed to provide students with the essential knowledge, competencies and professional attitudes required by middle and senior levels of management in contemporary hospitality and/or tourism organisations. The course commences with an introduction to the hospitality and tourism industries and focuses upon an application of the key aspects of marketing, e-business systems, planning and development, service management, financial management, commercial food service management, food and beverage management, rooms division management, research methods, and business development. Specialist units from which students can focus their studies include contemporary issues, facilities management, cruise ship tourism, eco-tourism, cultural tourism, special interest tourism, business events management and professional industry experience. This course also provides students with the opportunity to further specialise in various fields (such as event management, marketing, human resource management, or public relations) to give their studies a stronger industry focus in that area.

 

A Hospitality and Tourism Management degree offers career opportunities in management in the diverse areas of hospitality and tourism businesses, including food and beverage management, resort and gaming management, tourist attraction and theme park management, visitor management, event and conference management, hotel and restaurant management, and retail travel and tour operation management.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The Bachelor of Hospitality and Tourism Management degree requires a minimum of 360 credit points (24 units) and normally requires three years of full-time study or the part-time equivalent.

 

The degree has the following main components:

  1. a Core Program of 240 credit points (16 units) and
  2. a Supplementary Program of 120 credit points (8 units) consisting of:
  • an 8 unit major or supporting major;
  • or a minor and electives;
  • or two 4 unit minors;
  • or 8 electives.

 

NOTE: All Bachelor of Hospitality and Tourism Management students must complete a minimum of 60 credit points (4 units) at third year level and no more than 150 credit points (10 units) at first year level.
