This unit provides an introduction to the context, theory, process and practice of economic development planning. Economic concepts help planners understand patterns and processes relating to population, income, employment and business opportunities in a local economy, and to identify directions of planning action. The unit has a practical focus which includes analysing economic development plans that use these methods, and assessing the problems and potential development strategies of a local city or region. Students will gain not only a strong theoretical understanding of economic development, but will learn about economic development initiatives in the real world via applied examples and projects.
