SCHOOL OF PSYCHOLOGY AND SOCIAL SCIENCE
Credit Points: 15
Prerequisites:
YWK1202 Youth Work Practice 1

Description:
This unit trains students to apply core youth work principles to processes of assessment and intervention in the kinds of contexts that youth workers face every day. These will often involve informal and casual settings rather than structured counselling sessions, and students will learn how to organise and use such settings to engage young people and assess the need for intervention. Students will be able to practise problem-solving approaches to the primary youth work functions of social education, information, advocacy, referral and support. Primary communication skills of listening, assertiveness, and conflict management will also be addressed. These skills will be practised in a field setting.
