G22 Bachelor of Arts (Education)/Bachelor of Social Science (Youth, Health and Physical Activity)

INTRODUCTION

The double degree program is designed for prospective secondary school teachers of Health and Physical Education.  Students combine professional education studies with specialist content studies in two teaching areas - health and physical education.  Graduates will have a qualification in both Education and in Social Science.   The social science half of the double degree provides students with content on youth health, physical activity and the cultural and social contexts in which they, and their future students, will be operating.

 

COURSE LOCATION AND MODE OF STUDY

Mount Lawley campus.  Some social science units may be available externally.  Students may be required to attend the Joondalup campus for some units.

SPECIAL EXIT POINTS

Students who do not wish to complete the Bachelor of Arts (Education) may be awarded a Bachelor of Social Science majoring in Youth, Health and Physical Activity on completion of 24 units including a 12 unit major plus at least four core units as outlined in the Handbook under Bachelor of Social Science course code G36. Transferring students may include a maximum of eight Education units as electives in the Bachelor of Social Science. Transferring students must consult the Youth, Health and Physical Activity Course Coordinator to determine their study plan prior to transferral.

 

PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION

Graduates will qualify as four-year trained teachers and be able to meet teacher registration requirements in all Australian states.

 

NOTES

This course is a concurrent form of teacher education where the student is able to combine studies in both Education and the Social Sciences in each semester.  In the early stages, greater attention is given to content studies while professional studies tend to dominate the latter semesters.

 

A feature of the course is an extensive program of professional practice in secondary schools that commences in year 2 and culminates in the Assistant Teacher Program (10 weeks) in the final year.

 

Other forms of professional experience are undertaken within the Social Science degree through the GAPS program.  This allows students opportunities to undertake community placements, or undertake coaching and/or umpiring accreditation in specific sports under the national sports accreditation scheme or equivalent programs.

 

The course provides a clear balance of content studies, professional studies and professional practice.
