ECF3600 Economics of Work and Pay
SCHOOL OF BUSINESS
Credit Points: 15
Prerequisites:
ECF1110 Economics I

Description:

Microeconomic theory is used to explain the functioning of labour markets. Supply and demand analysis is qualified by appreciation of labour as a unique factor input and by the impact of institutional forces (government; employers; unions) on labour market outcomes. The theoretical framework is applied to the study of a number of current labour market issues: globalisation and labour; casualisation and the future of work; pay inequality; unemployment; unions; minimum wages; taxation and welfare over time. Whilst the unit draws on theory, its focus lies on the practical and applied aspects of labour economics. The overall aim of this unit is to enable students to develop a grasp of labour economics and its applications to problems in career choice, business and organisational management, and economic and social policy.
