SAN3122 The Sociology of Welfare and Wellbeing
SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATIONS AND ARTS
Credit Points: 15

Description:

The unit explores social inequalities in a globalised world, and enters the debate about state policies to keep these inequalities in check. Markets result in inequalities in housing, education, health and possessions, and social wellbeing generally, among different segments of the Australian population. If governments do nothing to reduce these inequalities, the gap between richer and poorer is likely to grow. Although policy options of states to respond to social inequality are limited by the current phase of economic globalisation, countries such as the United States, Sweden and Italy have responded with quite different policies, informed by diverse conceptualisations of social wellbeing. The unit examines the forms that inequalities take in a globalised world, and the policy options available to contain them.
