540 Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary)

The Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary) requires one year (two semesters) of full-time study or its equivalent on a part-time basis.  Periods of Professional Practice require a full-time commitment.  The Graduate Diploma of Education is a recognised qualification for secondary teaching anywhere in Australia.

 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

A recognised degree from a University or College of Advanced Education.  The degree should include units to major level which provide a suitable back-ground for a major secondary teaching area.  Units are also required to support a minor teaching area.

 

COURSE LOCATION AND MODE OF STUDY

The one year course is available by full-time or part-time study on Mount Lawley campus.

 

COURSE STRUCTURE

 

Five main areas are studied.

 

1.  Foundations of Education

These units are designed to develop skills for the prospective teacher as a decision-maker in the teaching-learning process.  They focus on lesson planning, teaching skills and strategies, classroom management, the adolescent learner, and the structure, organisation and important concerns of schooling in our society.

 

2.  Curriculum Study in a Major Teaching Area

School curricula and teaching strategies are studied to be able to teach years 8-12 in one of the following areas:

 

Art, Business Education, Computer Education, Dance Education, Design and Technology, Drama Studies, English Education, Home Economics, Languages other than English (LOTE), Library Studies, Mathematics, Media Education, Music, Physical Education, Science and Social Science Education.

 

3.  Curriculum Study in a Minor Teaching Area

School curricula and teaching strategies are studied to be able to teach years 8-10 in one of the following areas:

 

Art, Business Education, Catholic Studies Education, Computer Education, Drama Studies, Design and Technology, English Education, Health Education, Languages other than English (LOTE), Mathematics, Media Education, Physical Education, Religious Education, Science, Social Science Education, Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages.

 

4.  Elective Units in Education

Students choose a unit in second semester from elective streams in education.  These are designed for indepth study in areas of significance in secondary education.  The electives are an approved list of electives made available by the course coordinator.

 

5.  Teaching Practice

A minimum of ten weeks of practice is prescribed in three blocks during the year.  The course concludes with the final teaching practice.  In addition, other school-based activities are prescribed as part of the process of integrating foundation studies in education with curriculum studies areas.

To increase a prospective teacher’s competence in a content area and to enhance employment prospects, where undergraduate studies in a major or minor teaching area may be inadequate, an additional general studies unit, or units may be required.

General Studies units are content units in other undergraduate university courses.

Unless indicated otherwise, the curriculum studies units listed below satisfy Major and Minor requirements in each teaching field.

Notes:
1. Full-time students select one unit in their Major teaching field and one unit in their Minor teaching field for each semester.

2. Part-time students are strongly advised to initially enrol in EDU4111 Foundations of Education 1 (Secondary) and the curriculum major unit in Semester 1, and the continuing curriculum major unit and either EDU4211 or the education elective in Semester 2.

Professional Practice

The Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary) course requires students to spend substantial periods of time teaching in schools/centres as part of a coordinated programme of practice teaching.

 

Because of its responsibility for the education, safety and well-being of children in schools, the teaching profession demands the highest professional standards and personal ethics of practitioners.
