Description:
This unit introduces students to the use of statistics in psychology. The scientific method and its importance to an understanding of ourselves and our environment is described. We will adopt a commonsense approach to the study of research methods in psychology to alleviate the fear of scientific ideas often experienced by students who are beginning their studies. The main types of research design and methodology are introduced, basic statistical concepts and techniques are taught, and students are introduced to the use of computer statistical packages. The writing of laboratory reports, and an appreciation of their role in communicating research findings, is also introduced.
