U64 Bachelor of Music (Jazz) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
INTRODUCTION The Bachelor of Music (Jazz) is a three year undergraduate degree program designed to prepare the student for a performance and/or composition career in jazz. Tuition is given in solo and ensemble work, aural training, theoretical and historical studies, and also elective units. This degree is unique in Western Australia because it offers students the opportunity to experience many styles of performance and composition or to specialise in Jazz performance, and to concentrate on Aural Training.
Maximum flexibility has been retained whereby students may choose to audition for the Bachelor of Arts (Performing Arts) at the end of the second year in the jazz stream and grade point averages will not apply in this case.
Students will be expected to achieve a 65% grade point average in the seminal units (Principal Study, Improvisation and Ensemble) over the first two years of study to progress to the third year of the undergraduate degree.
It is not envisaged that this course will be offered in the part-time mode, but there will be provision for students attending other institutions to be included in the practical experiences within the course such as orchestral performances and associated activities.
AUDITION AND INTERVIEW REQUIREMENTS Prospective students must apply to the Academy Admissions Officer to arrange for auditions and interviews which are normally held in November-December. Applicants are assessed on the successful completion of a practical test on the applicant’s chosen instrument or in voice. Suggested level of performance: AMEB Grade VII Practical and Grade VI Theory (or equivalent).
The course consists of a two year foundation studies program. Students then select one of two majors in third year:
