This degree provides an opportunity for students to work in the field of special education. The first two years of the program are completed in the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood, Primary or Secondary) course. Upon successful completion, students may then transfer to the Bachelor of Education (Special Education) degree. Students will continue to focus on their area of specialisation (Early Childhood, Primary or Secondary). On completion of this degree students will be eligible to teach in a range of education support facilities in addition to a regular school.
Students who hold a teaching qualification and are four year trained and who wish to teach in Special Education, may complete the Graduate Certificate of Education in Special Education.
COURSE LOCATION AND MODE OF STUDY The course is available for full-time study on Churchlands campus in 2003 and will be moving to Mount Lawley campus from 2004.
TYPES OF UNITS The Bachelor of Education (Special Education) course prepares students to teach children and adolescents at various levels: those with specific learning difficulties in mainstream classes, those with mild to moderate disabilities in Education Support Units and Centres, and those with more severe disabilities in Special Schools. A range of units is provided in this course including foundation studies, direct instruction and behaviour management. There is also a strong focus on preparing teachers for inclusive education.
PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE In Years 3 and 4, students will be placed in Special Schools, Education Support Centres and Education Support units for professional practice. Additional opportunities for voluntary involvement in a range of support facilities may be provided.
SPECIAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Completion of first two years of BEd (Early Childhood/ Primary/Secondary).
