B56 Bachelor of Music (Jazz) Honours

INTRODUCTION

The Bachelor of Music degree provides a program of study for those seeking employment as professional musicians in the field of Jazz and Contemporary Music.  Tuition is given in solo and ensemble work, aural training, theoretical and historical studies, and a major area of study.

This degree is unique in Western Australia because it offers students the opportunity to experience many styles of performance and composition or to specialise in Jazz performance, and to concentrate on Aural Training.

There are two courses available to students who wish to study the Bachelor of Music Honours (Jazz).  This course focuses on Performance while the other focuses on Composition & Arrangement.  These are seperate courses with different codes so students should be aware to select the correct one.

AUDITION AND INTERVIEW REQUIREMENTS

Prospective students must apply to the Academy Admissions Officer to arrange for auditions and interviews which are normally held in November-December.  Applicants are assessed on the following criteria: successful completion of a practical test on the applicant’s chosen instrument or in voice.

Suggested level of performance: AMEB Grade VII Practical and Grade VI Theory (or equivalent).

Information on audition requirements and procedures is available from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.

JAZZ

INTRODUCTION

The Bachelor of Music (Jazz) is a three year undergraduate degree program with an additional Honours year subject to invitation only.  The undergraduate program is designed to prepare the student for a performance and/or composition career in jazz.

Students will be expected to achieve a 65% grade point average in the seminal units (Principal Study, Improvisation and Ensemble) over the first two years of study to progress to the third year of the undergraduate degree.

Maximum flexibility has been retained whereby students may choose to audition for the Bachelor of Arts (Performing Arts) at the end of the second year in the jazz stream and grade point averages will not apply in this case.

The Honours year will be awarded as a first, second or third class honours and can be offered to both Performance, and Composition & Arranging students based on progress throughout the three year undergraduate degree.
