CUE3105 Mathematics Education for Young Children 2

Description:

In this unit, students further develop their understanding of the outcomes and implied content of the Western Australian Curriculum Council documentation relating to K-3 mathematics with particular emphasis on the Space and Measurement strands of the curriculum.  Classroom management and organisation for Years 1-3 is discussed, and strategies for planning for young children’s mathematics learning are developed.  The nature of rich mathematical learning experiences is explored and materials and documentation to support such tasks are identified.   Strategies for assessing children’s achievement of mathematics outcomes are discussed.  The issues of standards for excellence in teaching mathematics in Australian schools, the integration of mathematics across the curriculum, the teaching of mathematics to children from diverse cultural backgrounds and the importance of positive home – school partnerships are addressed.
