SOA1301 Performance Practice 2 - Level 2
SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATIONS AND ARTS
Credit Points: 15
Prerequisites:
SOA1101 Foundation 2 - Level 1
SOA1100 Foundation 1 - Level 1

Description:

Neutrality

"The point of departure of an expression. The state of repose, of calm, of relaxation or decontraction, of silence or simplicity.'

This unit is designed to introduce the student to the notion of 'neutrality'. Students will work
with neutral mask (i.e masks that are not expressive and have no performative validity). Through this work students will gain an understanding of the neutral state as a foundation of performance: 'putting oneself in a state of readiness'.

When the face is masked or hidden, one is less timid, feels freer, more daring
and insincerity is quickly apparent…The mask demands both a simplification
and an extension of gestures; something forces you to go to the limit of the
feeling being expressed.
