This unit provides an examination of the concepts of impairment, disability and handicap. It provides information about a range of disabilities and aims to personalise information by investigating accounts given by individuals of their experience of living with a particular disability. Issues which people with different disabilities face in the areas of community integration, education, accommodation, and legal issues are examined. The role and operation of legislative approaches to disability will also be assessed with an examination of Commonwealth Disability Services Act 1986, State, and Commonwealth Disability Standards (1993).
