SWK4102 Rural Community Wellbeing
SCHOOL OF REGIONAL PROFESSIONAL STUDIES
Credit Points: 15

Description:
This unit examines health and well-being from a rural, regional and remote perspective. It will explore the major theoretical approaches to health and well-being, including individual responsibility, public health and critical perspectives. This unit will provide students with an understanding that health and well-being are socially constructed and that it is a resource which is distributed unequally in Australian society. The impact of inequality will be examined as it relates to women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people from culturally diverse backgrounds, people with disabilities, people with mental health issues and older people. The dominance of the medical model will be analysed and contrasted with the voice of consumers, carers and other models of health care. Finally students will explore concepts such as stigma, discrimination, rights, access and participation from a health perspective and examine the various roles that can be undertaken by social workers working around health issues.
