MYS4008 Teaching Middle Years Society and Environment

Description:
In this unit students will explore the conceptual and process outcomes of Society and Environment (S&E). The active citizenship outcome will be studied in connection with civics and citizenship education. The unit will provide an understanding of the WA curriculum framework, as applied to S&E for early adolescence. The relationship between Society and Environment-specific student learning outcomes and generic competencies will be explored, as will the relationship between S&E - specific professional standards of teaching and general principles of best pedagogical practice in the middle years of schooling. Particular consideration will be given to integrated teaching/learning strategies for making S&E interesting, relevant and useful for young adolescents. Students will have the opportunity to effectively plan outcomes-based learning experiences appropriate for middle schooling. They will also investigate current international, national and state research findings and initiatives that advance teachers’ professional knowledge in the area of S&E.
