LAN4137 Teaching English as a Second Language in a Western Australian Context

Description:
Students will examine the nature of second language learning in the light of their knowledge and understanding of first language development. Similarities and differences between first and second language will be identified and implications for practice will be explored. Students will consider a range of theoretical perspectives and relate these to curriculum design, resourcing, implementation and evaluation of teaching programs. The socio-cultural context of bilingualism will be explored and students will reflect upon issues of cultural pluralism and anti-racism within the Australian context. This will include consideration of the nature and development of Aboriginal languages, the role of community languages and the centrality of teacher and child attitudes to linguistic diversity. Students will work with ESL students in Western Australian schools.
