An introduction to the study of synchronic and diachronic variation in language; language change at the phonological, grammatical, lexical, semantic and discourse levels; the origins and evolution of language; languages in contact; regional and social dialects and national varieties of language; pidgins and creoles; the role of dialectology in historical and comparative linguistics; language universals and language typology; theoretical approaches to language change, including the neogrammarian, structural, transformational, and sociolinguistic.
