This unit introduces interpretive strategies for reading media texts (feature film, television, magazines, news, etc.). We focus on a series of issues, including the body in advertising; the construction of Aboriginality by the (predominately white) media; Aboriginal-produced feature film; the significance of 'family' and the romance code in children's films (Disney, et al); adolescent sexuality in television 'cult' texts such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer. We pay particular attention to globalisation and the media.
