U95 Master of Environmental Management

The Master of Environmental Management course provides opportunities for professionals who have graduated in fields other than Environmental Management to add to their qualifications and experience by extending their knowledge in environmental management.  The course is designed for professionals who require the skills and knowledge to integrate environmental planning, conservation and monitoring into the broader decision-making of their organisations.  The course covers the areas of environmental impact assessment, planning and monitoring set in the context of our major ecosystems, and emphasises the global, regional and local nature of environmental issues.

 

Note: the Graduate Diploma and the Graduate Certificate are also exit points for the Master of Environmental Management.

 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Normal admission requirement is a degree in an area other than environmental science or environmental management.  In addition, entry to Stage 3 normally requires at least 12 months’ workforce experience.

 

Students must have access to a computer capable of accessing the Internet, and CDROM technology.

 

MODE OF DELIVERY

The course will be offered in external mode only.  Delivery will be via materials delivered largely on-line or on CDROM.

 

COURSE STRUCTURE

The course is a professional Master degree consisting of nine units which can be completed over three semesters full-time or equivalent part-time study. The units are as follows:

 

 

 
STAGE 1
SCI5116 Environmental Administration and Planning 20 
SCI5117 Biological Conservation 20 
Plus one elective unit chosen from the following units:
SCI5123 Coastal and Marine Systems 20 
SCI5125 Forest Ecology and Management 20 
SCI5115 Inland Aquatic Systems 20 
 
Students who satisfactorily complete all three units may exit at this point with a Graduate Certificate in Environmental Management, or elect to continue on to Stage 2, the Graduate Diploma.
 
STAGE 2
SCI5250 Environmental Impact Assessment Procedures 20 
SCI5118 GIS and Remote Sensing 20 
Plus one elective unit taken from the following:
SCI5119 Environmental Economics 20 
SCI5105 Catchment Health 20 
SCI5123 Coastal and Marine Systems 20 
SCI5124 Land Degradation and Management 20 
SCI5125 Forest Ecology and Management 20 
SCI5115 Inland Aquatic Systems 20

Students who satisfactorily complete all six units may exit at this point with a Graduate Diploma in Environmental Management, or elect to continue on to Stage 3.
