The Bachelor of Education (Primary to Middle Years) qualifies students to teach at junior, middle, upper primary levels and lower secondary levels in two learning areas. The award is granted after the successful completion of 480 credit points (four years of full time study or equivalent) and aims to develop professional knowledge, skills and attitudes.
TYPES OF UNITS
Education and Foundation Studies Studies in the theory of education, educational psychology, primary and middle years teaching studies and practice, and assessment and reporting are central to the course. All students in the Faculty undertake two foundation units in Communication (Writing and Speaking; Information and Communications Technology). Education and Foundation studies are compulsory units.
Curriculum and Pedagogical Studies Study of syllabuses and related teaching methods in the curricula relevant to the phases of schooling: early childhood, middle childhood and early adolescence. Curriculum studies consist of compulsory and elective units.
Students identify two learning areas of curriculum specialisation for teaching years 8-10. For each learning area units are selected from the specialised discipline fields of English, mathematics, science, health and physical education and society and environment.
Electives Students can choose units from a variety of disciplines to support the development of their knowledge of content and its applications in specific learning areas or specific educational specialisations. These electives are generally offered in their second and fourth year of study.
PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE/WORKPLACE LEARNING The Bachelor of Education (Primary to Middle Years) course requires students to spend a substantial period of time observing and teaching in schools/centre/community programs as part of a coordinated program of practice teaching. Their workplace learning includes one or more placements in rural, regional and remote areas.
Because of its responsibility for the education, safety and well-being of children in schools and centres, the teaching profession demands the highest professional standards and personal ethics of practitioners. Before students are able to practise in schools they are required to submit a Department of Education Crim Trac Police Clearance and have a current Working with Children Check from the Department of Community Development.
Please refer to Professional Practice Information, Procedures and Rules (Early Childhood, Primary, Secondary) following the description of the Bachelor of Education (Primary to Middle Years) for further details on professional practices. |
