MIS1100 Information Systems I
SCHOOL OF BUSINESS
Credit Points: 15
Prerequisites:
none*

Description:

This unit aims to make students fully conversant with the role and place of information systems and information technology in business. Information dominates every aspect of activity that we undertake, from commercial to recreational. An understanding of the systems and the technology that manage the information is essential for everyone. The scope of the Management Information Systems School is such that self-management skills (e.g. values clarification, goal setting, professional planning and organisation) are incorporated in an endeavour to encourage the student to understand how information systems can be personally relevant both to career and business success and to personal and social life in the 'information age'.

The topics introduced in this unit include the basic hardware and software of desktop computing, the use of databases, electronic commerce and its impact, communications, networks and their application, and the development and management of computer based information systems. Ethical issues and the potential societal impacts of information systems and technology are also discussed. Practical classes provide the opportunity for all students to attain competence in Word, Excel and Power Point.  Tutorial Classes link to the lecture topics and are designed to develop critical thinking, teamwork, and consolidate study and research practices.
