LAN4101 Language in Teaching and Learning Contexts

Description:
This unit explores the way theories of language and language-learning inform teaching and learning practices in the field of language education. It introduces students to psychological, structural-functional and socio-cultural models of language, and encourages a critical appraisal of their impact in primary and secondary classrooms this century. The course develops students' abilities to identify and evaluate the language and learning assumptions that are implicit in syllabus documents, textbooks and classroom practices, and to reflect on their own assumptions and methods in the light of current philosophies of language and education.
