| This unit is intended to provide students with understanding of and practice in employing various approaches to the analysis of discourse and conversation as appropriate to teaching and other applications. It introduces functional grammar and some linguistic approaches to the analysis of style. It provides some background in cross-cultural pragmatics with special reference to communication difficulties in cross-cultural settings. Semantics is considered with particular reference to the compilation and use of dictionaries. While English provides the primary language for analysis, students are introduced to contrastive grammatical and discourse studies. Full Unit Outline | |||
